American Royalty
2021 to present
This series of wheel-thrown and altered, stoppered ceramic vessels is my attempt to understand the changing values that America holds dear. They are based on historical photographs of “kings” and “queens” from the San Francisco and Los Angeles Public Library photo archives, The series captures my love of local history and my ambiguity with mainstream feminist concepts (woman as a vessel, the beauty myth and and craft vs fine art). Additionally, they are vessels for examining racist/sexist/xenophobic tropes embodied in who was elevated to “queen” status and why.
It is a work in progress and the ideas are evolving as I make them.
